The Garde Arts Center was created in 1985 as a non-profit performing arts organization to save and reuse the historic Garde Theatre, one of the few remaining historic movie palaces in Connecticut. Built in 1926 during the golden era of motion pictures and vaudeville theatres, the restored exotic Moroccan interior of the 1420-seat Garde Theatre, with its multi-level lobby spaces sculpted out of former storefronts, provides a very audience-friendly theatre venue in a warm and beautiful atmosphere. Today, the Garde is becoming nationally recognized not only for its unique architecture but also for its multi-faceted programming and community service, winning the Garde the distinction of being named the 2022 Outstanding Historic American Theater by the League of Historic American Theaters.
